The original Ais Kacang was made of only shaved ice and red beans, and some versions are just shaved ice with colourful flavourings such as rose flavoured syrup. Traditionally, big ice cubes were shaved by hand using special tools, now ice shaving is easier with a motorized ice shaving machines, but some vendors still prefer to use the old hand-made method.
Today, the famous desert comes in different colours and flavours with variety of ingredients. The common Ais Kacang today consists of a small bowl filled with peanuts, kidney beans, sweet corn, grass jelly, attap chee (palm seed), colourful jelly, topped with shaved ice which is drizzled with Condense milk, Rose syrup and Sarsi syrup. If you want to mix it up further, try the not-so-common Ais Kacang with ingredients such as nata de coco, fruit cubes and sometimes ice-cream, chocolate syrup and even durian flesh.
